PRESENTATION TITLE:
Coding Strategies for PTA, Atherectomy and Stent Placement
GOAL
The goal of this session is to improve participants’ understanding of coding guidelines for percutaneous angioplasty, atherectomy, and stent placement in the peripheral vessels.
OBJECTIVES
1. Review coding guidelines for PTA, atherectomy, and stent placement in the peripheral vessels.
2. Discuss CCI policies and edits related to multiple interventions in the same vessel. 3. Apply modifiers to cases involving multiple peripheral interventions.
ABSTRACT:
Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, atherectomy, and stent placement are techniques used to improve the lumen of blood vessels that have been narrowed by atherosclerosis. Often more than one technique is needed to achieve a good result. This session is designed to help coders and staff involved in charge capture to ensure accurate billing for these interventions. The session is appropriate for professionals who deal with both professional (physician) service and hospital outpatient billing.
The codes and basic coding guidelines for PTA, atherectomy, and stent placement will be briefly reviewed. Then we will discuss cases that involve multiple techniques, such as PTA with stent placement, or PTA with atherectomy. Examples and scenarios will be used to illustrate the guidelines under discussion. Relevant CCI policies will be reviewed and discussed, as well as bundling edits and the use of modifiers. Documentation tips will also be provided to help audit-proof the provider’s medical records. At the end of the session, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions related to topics covered in the session. |
