PRESENTATION TITLE:
Mammography and Breast Procedures
GOAL
To improve the accuracy of procedure and diagnosis code selection for mammography and percutaneous breast procedures.
OBJECTIVES
1. Review coding and compliance guidelines for diagnostic and screening mammography services
2. Explain commonly performed percutaneous breast procedures and review relevant coding guidelines
3. Identify and address frequently asked questions and common errors in billing for these services
ABSTRACT:
Coding, documentation and compliance guidelines for the performance and subsequent coding and billing of mammography services will be reviewed in detail. The criteria for performing a diagnostic mammogram in place of or in addition to a screening exam will be reviewed to ensure compliance with Medicare and commercial payor guidelines. Computer Aided Detection (CAD) services and digital mammography will also be reviewed.
Commonly performed percutaneous breast procedures will be reviewed to ensure correct procedure coding. The different types of imaging guidance that may be employed will be discussed and how the different imaging modalities may impact coding for subsequent procedures.
Common coding tips and traps will be reviewed to identify and address potential documentation and coding concerns. Attendees will be challenged to identify their own areas of concern and opportunity to ensure their own compliance.
